My dream of roaming around Sydney on the back of a kangaroo was short lived when I realized Australians don’t actually do that (only joking). But I was quickly informed that the only way to see a kangaroo would be in the zoo…even more of a bummer. I thought all hope of actually playing with a kangaroo up close was lost until a fellow travel blogger/ friend of mine posted an instagram playing in a field of kangaroos. Alas! My bucketlist dream was not out of reach.
After conducting some research, I found out that Morisset Park was one of the only places in Australia where you could spend time with wild kangaroos. The animals in this area have grown accustom to interacting with humans, disputing their reputation for being dangerous. *I must warn you that they are still considered wild animals and must be approached with caution.* Many visitors pack picnics and share their food with the kangaroos. I’d recommend researching what the safest food to share with kangaroos is before you go. (I mainly saw them eating carrots and grapes during my visit). For a bit more detail regarding Morisset Park and how to get there I referred to this website. (It took us just under 2 hours to get from Bondi to Morisset).
My dad and I anxiously parked the car, not knowing if it would be hours or seconds before we spotted the first kangaroo. As soon as we got out, there was one hopping through the trees in the distance! We approached it very carefully…I mean, this was a wild animal we were dealing with. There was a family taking photos right up against a kangaroo just behind us, so we figured it was okay to crouch near it. The kangaroo was surprisingly sweet and seemed to really enjoy taking photos (something we had in common 😉 ).
We felt so lucky after our first kanga encounter, what are the odds we would get to meet one right away?? My dad and I decided to head over to the field where everyone was picnicking and quickly realized we were not as special as we thought. There were kangaroos everywhere! Taking photos with big groups, snacking on carrots, hopping along completely carefree. It was absolutely incredible.
This was one of my last days in Australia and definitely one of my favorites. C’mon, it’s not every day you get to play with wild kangaroos with your dad! If you have a love of kangaroos, then this is definitely something to add to your bucket list.
Have you ever been to Morisset Park or played with wild kangaroos? I’d love to hear about your experience in the comments below!
