The Great Barrier Reef

Little Brantley Abroad Takes

When I was approved for my Australian Working Holiday Visa I promised myself that I would not leave until I saw one of the greatest natural wonders of the world: The Great Barrier Reef. I think it is safe to say that this is on just about everyone’s bucket list and now I know why. The serenity of floating above coral with such vibrants colors, only mother nature could have created, whilst feeling the intense Australian sun covering your back, and the sound of a soft ocean breeze pushing waves onto the distant shore- this was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

My parents and I decided to take a weekend trip up to Hamilton Island, (you can read all about it here) after researching some of the best ways to see the reef. Since it was a short trip, we signed up for the Explore Group Half Day trip. It left at 8:30 in the morning and returned that afternoon. Being a sucker for a gorgeous day at sea, (blame it on The Yacht Week) I could have sailed through that crystal-clear water for weeks.

The tour guides suggested that we wore these thin wetsuits to protect ourselves from stingers as well as the strong summer sun. After a quick briefing we were in the water! It was like a movie reel of exotic fish and lively coral danced across us. No explanation can really do it justice, so I made a video ~below~ to try to capture our experience. Before we knew it, the snorkel instructors were calling us to return back to the boat. Luckily, as we were leaving the reef, a sea turtle floated right past us; it was the perfect end to a p-e-r-f-e-c-t day.

Hey Katie, I’ve just finished watching your video, great job. Looks like you had such a wonderful time. You’re right, the Great Barrier Reef is one of the wonders of the world, I can remember snorkeling it years ago and patting a huge codfish and swimming with manta ray sharks. Definitely a memorable experience. A wonderful post and yes, an adorable shot of your parents. 🙂
